Evolution Series – World Colors: Erhu

Erhu is an ancient Chinese bowed musical instrument with two metal strings.

The main type of huqin. The musician pulls the bowstring with the fingers of his right hand while playing, and the bow itself is fixed between two strings, forming a single whole with the erhu. When playing with the fingers of the left hand, a transverse vibrato is used, when the string seems to be pressed down, which is facilitated by the very design of the round fingerboard, above which the strings are fixed. The bow, connected to the strings, is quite difficult to “rosin”, but Chinese musicians drip melted rosin onto the upper part of a wooden cylindrical resonator. When the rosin hardens, the bow is “rosined” against it. The cylindrical resonator is equipped with a membrane made of python skin.
