The kobyz is a traditional Kazakh instrument with roots in shamanic culture. Made from wood and camel skin with horsehair strings, it has a unique timbre that can imitate the human voice, wind, water and animals. This sample pack, recorded in Ankara and performed by Tokzhan Karatay , is based on traditional Kazakh culture, with the kobyz imitating totem animals such as horses and swans.
Tokzhan Karatay is a composer and musician from Kazakhstan who is dedicated to preserving and renewing the kobyz tradition through performance and teaching. Combining a deep knowledge of folklore with a passion for experimental classical music, she strives to overcome cultural differences in her compositions.
