Sonus Paradisi – Leens Hinsz Organ VOL 1-3

In the city of Lens in the Netherlands, a new organ was built in 1734 in the church of St. Peter by the organ builder Albertus Antonius Hins, a student of Arp Schnitger, who studied at the same time as Arp’s son Frans Caspar Schnitger. It had and still has 27 registers, divided into two manuals and a pedal. The installation of the instrument was completed in December 1734.

The sound of the instrument is noticeably different from other works by Hins, such as in Midwold or Harlingen. Therefore, in terms of sound, it is closer to the tradition of Arp Schnitger.

The organ is large enough for a small church. The richly decorated body, carvings and sculptures were made by the masters Theodoor van der Haven and Caspar Struywig.

The organ presented in the sample set was recorded twice: the first time in 2017, before the planned restoration, and the second time in 2022, after the planned restoration. The distribution includes all three volumes.

The first volume is a demo set for 7 registers from Hoofdwerk. Namely – Quintadeen 16, Prestant 8, Octaaf 4, Quint 3, Octaaf 2, Mixtuur 4-5-6 sterk, Trompet 8 , and tremolated samples. Before-after comparison is included in the demo.

The second volume is the second part of the set presented in four stereo channels – Diffuse and Rear. When combined with the first volume, it creates a complete set. Also in the second volume there is a separate ODF for comparing the sound of the organ before and after restoration .

The third volume is the most complete version of the set in combination with the 1st and 2nd volumes. It is a recording of an organ in 5 perspectives : Organist Position, Direct, Diffuse, Distant and Rear. It does not have a function of comparing before and after in the mixer.

The range of the manuals is C-c3 (49 keys), the pedal C-d1 (27 keys). The manuals can be expanded to C-f3 (54 keys), the pedal to C-f1 (30 keys) by the corresponding button in the mixer tab. In the before-after comparison version, there is no range expansion function.
