Sonuscore – Origins Vol. 10: Contrabass Panduri & Tanbur

The rich low overtones of the double bass panduri create a wonderful harmony with the resonant tanbur. Despite the geographical proximity of these instruments, the double bass panduri is so rare that such a duet may never have existed. Until now.

The double bass panduri emerged as a modern reinterpretation of the classic version – musicians in Georgia needed an instrument with a deep sound for performing folk music on stage. Today, it is an exceptional rarity: there are probably no more than a dozen examples in the entire country.

The tanbur is an ancient Middle Eastern long-necked instrument related to the lute, whose booming timbre and distinctive sound production have graced the music of peoples from the Balkan Peninsula to Central Asia for centuries. The tanbur (known by many names in different cultures) is rightfully considered a classic instrument for creating that distinctive oriental flavor.

Tip #1

For an authentic double bass sound, transpose the panduri an octave lower – this will make it sound like a classic double bass, with deep, low plucking that emphasizes harmonic movement. Meanwhile, the more resonant tanbur will open up beautifully in the upper registers, adding bright accents.

Tip #2

Take one note of the tanbur as a drone (background sound) and use the remaining notes together with the double bass panduri to build the melodic line.

Presets

We designed the presets with realism in mind and to showcase the true beauty of these instruments. The presets are divided into two main categories:

  • Normal (classic) , with arpeggios in 4/4 time
