U-he – Bazille 1.1.3.16518 for WiN

The second project of Berlin Modular, Bazille is a large polyphonic modular system with digital (PD, FM) oscillators, multi-mode filters and a lot of modulation options. With so many possibilities to explore, the patches in Bazille should captivate you for years to come – it’s definitely a “geek machine”!

Bazille’s highly flexible modules

While the filters are traditional analog models, the oscillators are unabashedly digital: they combine two technologies that made digital synthesis accessible (and analog synthesizers suddenly fashionable) in the 1980s – FM (frequency modulation, or more accurately “phase modulation”) and PD (phase distortion).

In Bazille, each oscillator panel has five separate sections:

Pitch, Phase/FM, Phase Distortion, Fractal Resonance, and Outputs, each of which has a modulation input.

Since the four main oscillators have a frequency range starting at zero hertz, they can be used as synchronized or unsynchronized LFOs and can also take on individual shapes thanks to Bazille’s mapping generators. The oscillators are also capable of producing all types of FM sounds by connecting an audio source to the phase modulation input.

One of the most interesting features of Bazille’s powerful oscillators is an unusual process we call Fractalize. This can be used to create very bold sounds from tamed waveforms, with results similar to the classic cutting sound of a sync effect.

Mapping Generators:

A pair of mapping generators can be used for various purposes: changing the shape of modulation sources, defining offsets for each MIDI note, or stepping through values, for example, for round-robin effects. Four modes are available, and both generators can have maps of up to 128 steps. They are highly flexible, allowing you to create custom shapes thanks to drawing tools and presets accessible with a right click.

The Multiplex

The small, multi-inch modules found in most analog modular systems are simple mixer/splitter devices. Because the Bazille’s output sockets can accommodate multiple cables, the humble multiplexer has undergone a major redesign, becoming so flexible that we had to rename it the Multiplex. These four devices are very general-purpose: they can be used as signal mixers, crossfaders, ring modulators, amplitude modulators, and more.

The built-in modulation sequencer

The sequencer allows for much more complex movements than those possible with a standard LFO. It can be divided into 2, 3, or 4 sections, two of which can also be used as a per-note sequencer (steps can trigger envelopes). There’s also a modulating Rotate control, allowing you to switch between 8 different sequences.

Alternative Skin

Would you prefer to have all controls on one page?

Bazille comes with a larger, more compact skin called GearPorn, which dramatically changes the user experience. Ideal for Bazille experts, this skin is also the choice of ambitious beginners.
