Introducing Liminal: Zephyrian Brass , a library of trumpet, trombone, and valve trombone samples recorded in great detail. The library is based on aleatoric, sustained, and evolving sounds, with each sample imbued with character and movement thanks to live performance. The library covers the entire dynamic range of the instruments, revealing their hidden tonal nuances. Of particular note are the so-called “whisper tones,” a complex technique in which the performer uses controlled breathing to produce sound when the instrument barely resonates. This creates a fragile sound that balances breath and a specific pitch, giving the instrument a warm, airy timbre typical of reed instruments.

The audio was recorded using large-diaphragm condenser microphones, placed within centimeters of the instrument’s bells. This allowed us to capture hyper-intimate details into the samples. The library is well suited to add unpredictability and creative imperfection. The LIMINAL range is not specifically intended for fast passages or soaring melodies. Instead, you may see the libraries as collections of naturalistic pads – offering humanistic details not found in something derived from a synthetic source.

The user-interface allows articulations to be layered, mixed and reversed. The ‘crossfade gizmo’ allows artful blending of sound layers with intuitive color-coded controls. LFO controls can also be enabled, allowing your DAW’s tempo to dictate the modulation of an individual layer’s volume. This opens the door for tempo-synced swells and unleashes even more creative possibilities for evolving texture.
