Sugar Bytes – Egoist v1.6.3 for WiN

Use samples or entire songs as a sound source. Instant groove. The built-in bassline, drum machine and sequencer with several effects make Egoist the perfect tool for creating track sketches in the studio and on the go. You will quickly fall in love with its unique features and concept.

Egoist easily handles what would take a traditional sampler considerable effort: it can transform even the most predictable samples into great-sounding pieces in record time.

Each section has separate controls for pitch, direction, attack, decay, and volume. So, let’s say you play the same section over and over again – each step will sound completely different from the previous one.

The Factory Library contains 760MB of audio material, including acoustic beats, piano and percussion loops, synths, vocals and effects, so you can work for hours without using external audio devices. With the Load Sample function, you can import .wav, .aiff and .mp3 formats.

Once you have created a slice sequence, you might want to take inspiration and further structure your idea. So we added a bassline and a beat. This trio of samples, beats and bass really provides a minimalist setup to bring the idea to life in one fell swoop.

The Bass tab lets you create classic bass lines (TB303 or SH101 style). Run the oscillator in sawtooth or pulse mode and adjust basic parameters such as resonance, decay and cutoff modulation.

The drum module, like its neighbor, is simple and concise. Over 1000 samples of kick drum, snare drum and hi-hat (open and closed), neatly organized into 15 kits. You can control the pitch, volume and speed of the sound. 96 samples per drum kit and the “Mix and Match” option give you an endless number of combinations.

Effects are not a static addition, but can be changed step by step. Of course, the ability to process effects as individual moments is much more dynamic than using global effects. This concept will be familiar to anyone familiar with Effectrix.

There are a total of 7 processors – a small but well-structured set: Reverb, Chorus, Delay, Filter, Lo-Fi, Tape Stop and Looper – which can be applied to Slicer, Beat and Bass.

These sound tricks are quite nicely depicted in their respective icons. Each offers several parameters that can be edited using sliders, and the Filter section starts with 7 types and an equal number of cutoff modulations.

Like a traditional hardware sequencer, Egoist uses a pattern-based method to combine patterns into a composition. Each pattern can contain a separate sample, slicing settings, individual bass, rhythm and effects settings…

If you prefer to use your DAW’s sequencer, the small piano key button in the lower left corner lets you trigger patterns or individual slices. The settings page lets you choose whether the sequencer’s sync source is internal or via your host, and whether the DAW/host triggers the sequencer on playback.

The patterns themselves are launched by pressing the notes C1–D#2, and individual sequencer slices are launched by pressing the notes C3–D#4.
