Terrain is a multi-functional software synthesizer and sound design environment. It combines multiple synthesis methods, sample processing, modular routing, a powerful modulation system, and built-in effects. Essentially, it’s not just a synthesizer with a set of presets, but an entire sound laboratory for creating your own tones.
Eight oscillators and eight synthesis engines. Each of the eight oscillators can work in one of eight modes:
- Wavetable – wavetables with variable timbre.
- Sample – sample playback.
- Granular – granular synthesis, allowing you to transform sound into moving clouds of textures.
- FM – frequency modulation for complex digital timbres.
- Resynth – sound resynthesis.
- Harmonic – working with harmonic composition.
- Modal – modeling resonant and percussive timbres.
- Organics – a library of acoustic instruments.
Large library of sounds
The set includes 500 wavetables, 2177 one-off samples and 74 acoustic instruments. There are basses, keys, bells, pads, percussion, atmospheric textures and sounds of analog synthesizers.
You can import your own audio, use it as a sample, convert it to a wavetable or process it through Resynth.
Patcher – Modular Sound Architecture.
Terrain’s key feature is the ability to independently connect oscillators, filters, effects, and modulators with virtual cables. You can build custom processing chains and create complex multi-layered patches that go far beyond standard subtractive synthesis.
Four maps for dynamic processing
- Shaper – draw curves for volume, filter, pan, distortion, and other parameters.
- Glitch – repeats, stutters, tape stops, freezes, and random glitches.
- Arp – a step arpeggiator with control over pitch, octaves, gates, and trigger probability.
- Robin – distribute notes between oscillators in a specified, random, or alternating order.
- All four tools help create rhythmically changing, vibrant, and unpredictable sounds.
Deep modulation system
10 LFOs, 5 envelopes, 9 macros, and MPE support are at the user’s disposal. Modulators can be assigned to virtually any suitable parameter: filter frequency, wavetable position, overdrive, pan, effect depth, and other settings.
This allows you to create sounds that constantly change over time, rather than remaining static.
Sixteen built-in effects
include Reverb, Delay, Distortion, Granular, Filter, Chorus, Flanger, Phaser, Tape, Equalizer, Widen, Compress, Multiband, Bode, Splitter, and Utility.
Effects can be combined in any order and placed at different points in the modular layout. This is convenient for complex sound design, spatial processing, and creating experimental chains.
