apulSoft apUnmask is an audio plugin for enhancing audio components that are psychoacoustically masked by other components.

To achieve this, apUnmask uses part of the Opus high-quality audio codec’s detection algorithm. It extracts signal components that are removed during compression. These components are typically inaudible because they are masked by louder components in time and frequency. apUnmask allows you to enhance and correct the masked content and add it to your music.

To shape the frequencies of the extracted signal, it is passed through a linear phase graphic equalizer. This provides a smooth frequency response along a Bézier curve without overshoot.

The result is a hyper-realistic sound. This process helps the listener perceive more aspects of the music simultaneously. apUnmask can be used as a mastering effect or as an intelligent exciter for individual instruments.

Decades of research have led to sophisticated algorithms that determine what can be removed without compromising the listener’s experience—all to save space. With apUnmask, you can leverage this research by extracting and enhancing these signals to enhance the listener’s listening experience.

Suggested Workflow

• Insert apUnmask into the master track or a separate track to enhance.
• Adjust the overall gain until a reasonable delta signal level is visible.
• Click the Delta Audition button to hear the “ghost” sound removed by the Opus codec. This is usually hidden in the background of your music.
• Experiment with the Resolution slider to find the most interesting components.
• Adjust the EQ curve to highlight and enhance the desired elements.
• Disable Delta Audition and enjoy the results.
