The instrument originates from southwest China, but has become a standard and popular musical instrument throughout China; it is still used in modern Chinese compositions. It is used as a solo instrument in Chinese music, and can be heard in the musical accompaniments of many films and in quite popular compositions.
Although the bau is most popular in China, the instrument has been adopted relatively recently by many composers and performers in Europe.
