Writing a full musical idea shouldn’t take hours of drawing MIDI notes one by one. You hear the vibe in your head — you just need a starting point that actually sounds like music.

PhraseLab writes four parts at once: chords, melody, bass and arpeggio, every one of them following the chord that’s playing. Lock what you love, regenerate what you don’t, and build entire songs from scenes you can arrange and export as MIDI.

Every genre has been tuned by ear. Dance tracks keep out of the kick with offbeat stabs and rolling bass lines, hip hop and R&B sit in a laid-back pocket, and melodies are written as phrases with a hook that comes back. Notes only leave the key when it makes musical sense.

• Lead drums: a groove suitable for every genre—four on the floor, boom bap, one on the floor, half on the floor, keyboard, and more. They adapt to the music and are never exported.
• Hook melodies are recorded as repeating phrases with genre-specific phrasing and in the styles of “Chant”, “Fanfare”, “Hook”, “Solo” and “Chord Lead”.
• Chord rhythms from pads to Europiano, boom-bap-stab, skunk, string accompaniment and palm-muted guitar playing, plus Push, Slide In and Sus Resolve.
• One swing setting moves all tracks at once, while an individual Feel setting allows you to shift tracks relative to the beat or speed them up.
• Pin the tracks you like and restore only the parts you need, as well as add or remove melodies, basslines, and arpeggios in each scene.
• Scenes for the verse, chorus, and bridge, combined into a complete song and exported as a single MIDI file. Each scene has its own time signature, including 6/8, 12/8, 7/8, and 5/4.
• Import chords played on the keyboard or Push, and PhraseLab will detect the tempo and time signature, suggest suitable genres, and write a melody, bass, and arpeggio.
