Dive into Rue Boyer with Tony Hoffer as he recreates Phoenix’s “Everything Is Everything” from the ground up. In this episode, Hoffer recreates his original Sunset Sound mix in its entirety, revealing how balance, saturation, unexpected inspirations, and deliberate lo-fi texture shape the band’s signature sound.
The track was originally created after the band arrived in Los Angeles with the ideas from Versailles fully formed; it combines live drums with borrowed samples and lo-fi textures. Chopped acoustic guitars, processed as samples, and vocal tones transformed into synth sounds add a unique sonic character to the composition. Starting with an empty session, Hoffer rebuilds the mix, first creating a stereo bus, then balancing drums, bass, and guitars into a dense, cohesive atmosphere, equal parts dance and rock.
The sound is achieved not through heavy processing, but through Hoffer’s deliberate color choices. Subtle saturation, bit-height reduction, stereo field widening, and subtle compression on several buses give the song its individuality. In the end, the new mix closely mirrors the original, demonstrating that the sonic character is the result of an accumulation of solutions, not a single piece of equipment.
