The Chapman Stick , a futuristic instrument, offers the range and playability of a piano, combined with the expressiveness and timbre of a guitar-bass hybrid. The Stick is held vertically and played with both hands using a technique known as tapping. Rather than plucking the strings or using a pick, tapping involves quickly pressing the strings to produce notes. This unique invention has a distinctive, harmonically rich sound, capable of producing staccato percussive sounds, sparkling chords, and buttery-smooth melodies.

The Evolution 10 String Stick lets you experience this truly amazing sound in a virtual performance, carefully sampled to recreate all the capabilities of the original instrument.

The standard model of the stick has ten strings, divided into five high and five low, giving you the ability to play over a range of more than 5 octaves. We sampled each string individually across the entire fretboard. The Evolution 10 String Stick automatically determines which strings and frets to use based on the position of both hands. You can also choose the split point between the high and low ranges on the keyboard. Automated features like these make playing a MIDI keyboard easier while still providing a natural, authentic sound.

We developed the library in collaboration with Rosewood Recording Company, one of Utah’s most respected recording studios. Guy Randle, the company’s owner and engineer, used analog audio equipment to skillfully convey and highlight the instrument’s rich tonal qualities. The Evolution 10 String Stick contains both the recorded and enhanced signals, which can be mixed as desired.
