M-Leveller is an intelligent, event-based volume automation module that delivers consistent levels with unrivaled transparency and superhuman precision. It adjusts the gain of audio events just before they occur, providing precise control without sacrificing dynamics or timbre.
Save time with intelligent volume automation
Manually adjusting the volume of a mix can be time-consuming and inconsistent. M-Leveller simplifies this process with intelligent, event-based automation, adjusting levels with precision beyond human capabilities. It recognizes individual notes or phrases and makes adjustments easily, ensuring a naturally balanced mix without the need for painstaking manual editing.
By automating volume adjustments, M-Leveller saves hours of tedious work while delivering clearer , more consistent audio. Whether used as a primary equalization tool or as a preparatory step before further processing, it improves your workflow and ensures your mix is balanced without the hassle.
Pre-leveling compression for smoother dynamics
Compression works best when audio levels are already well balanced, and this is where the M-Leveller makes a big difference. By eliminating volume inconsistencies before compression, it provides a more stable input signal, allowing compressors to focus on shaping dynamics rather than compensating for sudden level changes.
Because M-Leveller adjusts levels without changing the waveform or tonal balance, it helps compressors work more efficiently, preserving transients and providing smoother, more natural control of dynamics. The result is a cleaner, more controlled mix with improved clarity and consistency.
Transparent equalization that preserves musicality
Excessive compression can reduce the dynamics of a performance, causing the sound to sound mechanical or unnatural. M-Leveller avoids this by adjusting the volume before each performance, while maintaining the natural movement of the sound.
By ensuring consistent levels without over-processing, M-Leveller preserves the musicality, expression and detail of every note. Whether used on vocals, instruments or full mixes, it provides precise control while preserving the natural energy of your track.
Key Benefits
- Automate volume control effortlessly, eliminating the need for manual adjustments and saving time in your workflow.
- Maintain a consistent balance of vocals and instruments, ensuring they sound natural in the mix without sudden level changes.
- Smooth out drum dynamics, maintaining energy and impact while maintaining groove clarity.
- Optimize audio levels before compression, allowing compressors to work more transparently and efficiently.
- Preserve the natural sound of your performances by ensuring volume consistency without affecting transients or tonal balance.
- Prevent sudden voltage spikes on the main bus, reducing the risk of unwanted distortion and keeping
your mix clean and controlled.
Features
Target
The “target” level is the main control of the plug-in. It sets the desired peak output level for the processed audio in dBFS (decibels relative to full scale).
Noise Floor
sets the level below which audio events will not be suppressed. Use this control to keep background noise, bleeding, breathing, etc. from matching the level of the rest of the audio. The input waveform display can be used to visually adjust the noise floor so that unwanted audio events remain below and important events remain above.
Display Range
controls the range of levels displayed on the waveform display. The maximum level is fixed at +3 dBf, while the minimum level can be set to -48, -36, -24, or -16 dBf.
Waveform/diff Display
The Waveform Display provides a visual history of the input and output levels over the last 2 seconds. The left half of the display shows the input levels in blue, while the right half shows them in gold.
Speed
“Speed” determines the speed of the leveler’s response. It determines the duration of events that M-Leveller Mix detects: at high “Speed” values, the plugin levels individual notes, percussion hits, etc., while at low “Speed” values, entire musical phrases are leveled.
Mix
The “Mix” parameter determines to what extent the gain control is applied to the sound. You can use this parameter to preserve some of the original level changes of the sound, which is basically the same as parallel compression.
Perceptual Filter Shape
By default, the M-Leveller mixing function works based on the peak level of your track. However, peak levels do not always reflect how we perceive the loudness of a sound. Human hearing is naturally more sensitive to high frequencies and less sensitive to low frequencies. This means that high-frequency noise and low-frequency noise with the same peak level can be perceived as different loudness by the human ear.
Peak / Filtered
The Peak / Filtered parameter in the Perception Filter section determines how much of the filter is applied during equalization. At 0%, the plug-in performs equalization based solely on peak levels. Higher values adjust M-Leveller’s sensitivity to blending according to the Shape setting to better mimic human perception.
Filter button
The Filter button allows you to listen to the results of the perception filter directly. You can use it to adjust the Shape frequencies.
Match Sidechain
The Match Sidechain button allows you to match the level of an external signal, rather than manually setting a “target” level. To use this feature, please refer to your DAW manual for information on how to set up the external sidechain input for the plug-in.
Mix Assist
The Mix Assist button allows the plug-in to record and analyze input data and intelligently adjust processing parameters. M-Leveller Mix records 3.5 seconds of audio for analysis. For best results, play the busiest part of your track when learning.
Output
The “Output” parameter determines the amount of clean gain applied to the processed signal.
Gain Adjustment Mode
The “Gain Adjustment Mode” option in the plugin’s main menu allows you to choose whether the M-Leveller is allowed to boost (increase the level), cut (decrease the level), or both to reach the “target” level.
A/B Switch
The A/B buttons provide a convenient way to compare different parameters and select the optimal setting for your audio processing needs. With a single click, you can easily switch between two different versions of the same processing chain and compare the results.
Undo-Redo Options
TheM-Leveller plugin comes with a handy feature of built-in Undo and Redo options, giving you extra peace of mind when working on audio processing. With these features, you can easily return to previous settings or redo changes that were made by mistake, saving time and eliminating the risk of potentially losing valuable settings.
Scalable GUI
The UI scaling feature in M-Leveller allows you to adjust the size of the GUI to your preferences and optimize your workflow. With a wide range of available scaling options (from 80% to 150%), you can customize the interface to suit your visual design and work style.
