u-he – Twangstorm v1.0.2.16742 for WiN/MAC

Twangstorm is a flexible spring reverb with tricks. If you’re familiar with Bazille, you may have already encountered its built-in spring unit. We took that, then modeled two more reverbs, coupled it with a drive section, a filter stage, an envelope, and a modulation matrix. It emulates a carefully selected set of the most popular blocks you’ll find in classic guitar and instrument amps, recreating the weird character of real springs.

Swinging springs

Hitting the computer won’t make Twangström break, so we added a ringing control. This is used to shake the springs, either manually or via modulation and automation. You might think this is a gimmick you don’t need anymore (other than to wake up the neighbors), but if you modulate it a little, it all comes alive!

Tank control

Twangström reverb is based on physical modeling. Unlike plugins based on impulse responses (IR), our approach simulates the physics of mechanical reverb. By modeling the wavefront passing through the medium, we can include all aspects of excitation, reflection, dispersion, interference and other audio properties. Twangström does not simulate the sonic outcome, but rather simulates the physical device. This means that all dimensions of the device are controlled in real time on a sample-by-sample basis – which ultimately adds up to quite a bit of power at your fingertips!

Envelope

The envelope in Twangström has 4 different modes and can take the signal from the input, output or external sidechain. You can choose between Envelope Follower , Attack and Decay , Attack and Release or Cyclic modes. The latter is similar to a 2-stage LFO. The controls shown will adapt to the selected mode, with the Threshold not being shown in Envelope Follower mode.

Modulation matrix

The modulation matrix has three general purpose modulation slots, and yes, you can select Shake as one of the many targets for the Twang control modulation!

Low frequency generator

The LFO has a variety of time bases, including an unsynchronized one measured in seconds. Synced options include both dotted times and triplets. There are 8 different waveforms to choose from, 2 of which are random step or slide shapes.
